For the older trucks just finding anyone who makes a quality shock can be hard enough. For a rig with a heavy duty suspension, I would suggest an off-road shock of the more expensive quality. I have used Rancho for my V10 2500, and really liked them, but can't get them anymore for it. You might have better luck with a more popular truck.

I'm running Ranch RS5000 series shocks and have been pretty happy with them. Be sure to check (or have a professional check) the condition of your suspension to ensure that your control arm bushings and other suspension components are in good shape, as this affects ride quality, too. Also, check to ensure your tires are in good shape, too, as these also affect ride quality.

Have a look at these http://sulastic.com/truck-shackle-suspension-sa-07
I have KYB Gasajust shocks on ours. It rides OK empty and really nice with 300# in the box. A lot of people like the Bilsteins. The 2nd gen Dodges rode rough new in my opinion.

I went with OEM quality KYB shocks thinking they'd have a smoother ride than the heady duty shocks I had....no difference really. I'm in the same boat as you, just wanting a smoother ride. But at the same time, these KYB's were cheap like me, so that could be the issue too. Might have to spend some bucks to smooth the bumps.
