Cool Stuck in Limp Mode: 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd 5.2 46RE

Hi there.

I have a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd 5.2 46RE with 170k miles. It only has 1st, reverse, and gears 1 and 2 so I cant drive over 35mph without blowing the engine. The engine codes are P0138 (O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2) and P1762 (Governor Pressure Sensor). The tranny will shift through all the gears when cold.

Help a brother out?

Thanks!

I'll be honest idk the inner workings of a trans all in-depth but I always heard it's worth a shot replacing those governor sensors if the trans is acting up, especially with a code too, it can't hurt to try and could fix it.....service the trans, don't flush it, it can kill these trans I've read. Do a new filter, fluid, and band adjustment too along with the new governor sensor.....a new o2 sensor couldn't hurt either if it's bad enough to give a code, they're fairly cheap on rockauto, I'd go NTK or Denso brand.

hope that helps somewhat, -knock on wood- I haven't had my trans mess up yet, although mine is the older one without the electronics in the earlier 2nd gen rams, mine is the 46RH I believe

if it's possible for you to do since you're going to do all that, I always heard adding a trans cooler can really make these trans last alot longer too

Replace the pressure sensor and solenoid then clear the codes(might want to replace the 02 while you are there).

Thanks WhiteSnake and Moparite.

I am hoping not to have to drop the pan (never done that) so I think I will replace the O2 sensor first, reset codes and give it a whirl. I read somewhere that the ground for the O2 sensor is on same circuit as the pressure solenoid and can screw things up.

Good luck with your 46RH

Well if you do have to drop the trans pan it's a good time to adjust the bands while you're there. Probably a good idea to replace the filter while in there.

Sounds good. I ordered NGK 23014 Oxygen Sensor online and plan to pop it in when the exhaust is hot. For the band adjustments and solenoid install, i'll have to watch some DIY videos. I'll let you guys know what happens...

Using your Factory Service Manual is a really good source of info on this.

Factory Service Manuals for all year make and models. You'll want 1996-1997. The page you are looking for is 21-360. Bottom right is the start of the info "Front Band Adjustment".
https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...e-manuals.html

You will need:
an inch lb torque wrench
A 5/16 8 point socket if you can't find a 5/16 square socket. I bought the one in the link.
And a T-40 Torqs socket

Front band is easy. You can do it without dropping the pan.

Rear band instructions are on page 21-362.
Just fallow them step by step and you will see just how easy it is. Chrysler made these transmissions easy for the owners to work on. The cost is that WE are responsible for maintaining them.

Oh.. Pro tip... to back the screws off to the appropriate amount of turns I cleaned the surface of the screws and a surface point on the transmission itself. I then made 2 marks using a permanent marker. I put one mark on the edge of the screw and another on that same corresponding side. This helped me keep track of turns in case I got distracted while doing it. Visual references are always a good thing when doing work like this.

I did it something like this.
Just without the paint on the nut. I chose permanent marker because it doesn't flake off into the filter like paint will.

Wow. Thanks Shadow. I'm still wrapping my head around all of that but i'll take it step by step. How long do you think all that would take a noob?

It took me about 6 hours but 5 of it was just trying to find that socket. Once you get the pan dropped it's all butter from there. The book has a diagram to show where the rear band screw is.

Hind sight's a bitch. After I was finished I thought about doing a video. I'll probably do one the next time I've got the pan off.
