what exactly controls the ignition sytem on these trucks?

Use your meter(not test light) and test the coil plug not plugged into the coil. Put the negative lead of the meter to the ground on the battery then test both leads on the plug. You should have 12V on the hot one with the key on. Remember that the asd does not stay on so you have to test it quickly before it shuts off.

If you go direct from the battery you should use an inline fuse. I would give that a try.

i did that. I was getting a little over 10 volts. When I cranked the engine the meter moved so much I couldn't read it.
​​​​​​​im probably going to tow it to a mechanic this week.
