Cooling system issue 1997 Dodge Ram 5.9 v8 4x4
alright so awhile back I had a cooling system issue with my truck running a bit hot turned out water pump fins corroded off had one left lol anyway I replaced water pump coolant hoses thermostat (160 degree) plus both sensors then flushed the system refilled with passenger side jacked up to check for air bubbles and top off, well I’ve been running a scanner to read life data to see what both sensors register the pcm one shows between 170-185 the gauge is a right below 200 degrees my question is, is it normal for a 160 degree thermostat to run 170-185 or could I have a blockage somewhere?
These beasts aren't that difficult to "burp". Does she overheat on hot days whilst running the a/c? For years, I use stant therms, ol blue would go up to round half scale (96 Ram 1500 318/195 stat), stay for round a minute then settle down just under there on cool days or stay there on hot days. My scanner said, "ur golden, don't worry". If she's not overheating then I say she's prolly just old n a little hardening of the water jackets.

Heyyou you sir are right my mopar read perfect but I messed up the sensor when doing a tstat so I got a master pro it was slightly off then I tried a bwd today and oh boy it was past 200 and my live data scanner reading the other coolant sensor showed I was at 170-180 so that was a waste I will be ordering one tomorrow from my local dealer and will report back thank you guys.
I reset the needle on my gauge to read what my scanner was telling me. Only because the PO took the gauge cover off to clean it and messed up all the settings. The other day the truck chimed at me, I saw the check gauges light. Temp gauge was pegged. Then it suddenly dropped to normal. Time to replace the thermostat. The timing cover is leaking a bit to the outside. I really need to go ahead and do the plenum/thermostat/timing chain/timing cover/oil pan gasket repair.
