Default 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 vs 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd

So this may be a dumb question but I just got a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd 5.9 v8 and the radiator went to hell and when I was replacing it I noticed that their aren’t transmission lines going into the radiator only to the cooler unlike my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 which has them going to the radiator than to the cooler is that normal? I’ve only had 4x4 2nds gens up until the recently acquired 2001

Is there provisions for the cooler in the current radiator? Previous owner may have simply bypassed it, or, replaced the radiator with one from a manual trans truck.... So far as I know, ALL of the auto trans had the in-radiator cooler, and the external cooler was part of the towing, or some variety of 'heavy duty' package.

Someone likely just bypassed it then, for whatever reason.
