O/D unit won't go back together with tranny
1997 Dodge 1500
4x4 5.9 360
Automatic 46re
So I picked this rig up, it didn't have an overdrive unit or transfer case or either of the drivelines. So I bought a 94 Dodge 1500 same make and model, as a parts rig so I have pulled transfer case both drivelines and the overdrive unit. This last weekend I threw the overdrive unit up on the bracket got the splines to line up... Slid and shook it forward and it stops about an inch short from meeting with the transmission. The park rod I think might be what's holding me up. Actually as I ran into this issue I turned to this forum and found a thread saying that the rod needs to held just right n using brute Force via hammer and a block of wood should be enough to coax it together....tried that didn't work...so now I'm back to square one. This is the first automatic transmission related project I've done, outside of just doing a tranny swap. One thing I noticed when trying to get it to slide together, the unit actually bounces back towards you....to me I don't think the park rod is causing it to bounce back at me like that. So my question is...am I missing something else here, I honestly think the output shaft is bottomed out in my O/D unit, are the shaft lengths that much of a difference between 94-97, my spline count matches, same tranny model, i just feel like im missing something here, but like I said this is a first in depth automatic tranny related project for myself. Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

The 94 trans is an RH. It's hydraulically controlled, the 97 is an RE, electronically controlled, so, there are some pretty significant differences in the trans internals..... whether the o/d unit is different as well, that, I don't know. You could measure the depth of the hole in the o/d unit, and the length of the shaft on the trans, see what you come up with.
The park rod I think might be what's holding me up
