Default Fuel gauge drops to Empty and engine cuts out.

Ok I picked up a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, as i am driving all of a sudden the fuel guage drops to empty (yes I have half of a tank of fuel in the vehicle) and the engine cuts out. I does not want to restart at all. Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking fuel pump and module assembly to replace, but not too certain I would greatly appreciate a second opinion. Thanks in advance for your help.

I would think frayed wiring could cause this. Like somewhere in the harness, the fuel gauge wires and fuel pump wiring could be shorting out.
