Default 4x4

i have a 95 1500. my grandpa bought in it in 95 and my dad later got 2001. my dad gave me the truck 2017 . before he gave it to me the four wheel drive went out so he had replace i and make it so trust u have to manually get under the truck and switch the hose on the front end. well acouple months ago. while my front end and shifter was all in 2wd it started to make a horrible scratching like metal on metal but it would only happen when i pulled out thne would stop. only way for it to not do it at all is if i pull my shifter into 4wd but leave my vacuum pump in 2wd . i have no idea what is caused it .

The more understandable your post, the easier it is for us to help you.

That said, here is how it is supposed to work. Put the system back to stock, see what happens. If it is still noisy, may want to pull the tailshaft, and check and see if the snap-ring has abandoned the shaft. (common problem, lets to t-case blowing itself into pieces.)

Side note, not related to the post kinda: When I go to shift into 4hi, do I need to be parked, neutral, or turned off? When I tried, it would grind and then eventually get into 4hi, I was in park, truck on.

You can shift into 4 hi while moving at any speed up to 55 mph. For 4 lo, you gotta be moving less than 3 mph, and don't be on the gas. Shift FAST, else you will get stuck in neutral, and have to shut the motor OFF to get it into any gear.

Slow down and proof read. The world (and we) can wait. That said, hope you get your truck working properly. Lots of good minds on here to help.

Don't use 4x4 on high traction surfaces either. You won't like the results.

The CAD on the front end is a common failure, you can permanently lock it of cheap or if you don't want to to that, you can get the Posi Lock cable actuator.
