Default Updating 99 46re to 2001

So ive done a fair amount of googling, and now i think its time.to just ask here.

I just got an 01 ram 1500 5.9 4x4 auto. Previous owner swapped in a 46re from a 99. With the 99 trans the factory pcm wouldnt shift it, so he just swapped in the 99 pcm as well. Now it shifts fine but has other difficulties lol.

Ive seen some reference to early 46re"s having different solenoids than the 01, which i assume to be my problem. But i havent found anything detailed. The truck came with the original trans and pcm with it. So id like to know what to swap to bring the factory pcm back into it and function as intended

Could anybody shed some legitimate light on this? Id greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Need to change all the electronics in the trans. Governor pressure sensor and solenoid, and O/D, and TCC solenoids. The retainer for one of the governor parts as well. (don't remember which one.) TCC and O/D solenoids just have a different connector than the older versions. I would suggest getting new electronics, and the correct retainer from the original trans. Fair few folks offer complete kits, with the borg warner heavy duty governor solenoid. (a VERY good idea.) They run around 150-200 on ebay. (just pick a seller with a good rating. )

Do those changes require full removal of the trans or is it all accessible through the pan?

Nope, drop the pan, its all right there. May have to drop the valve body to do TCC and O/D solenoids.... some folks have been able to swap without doing so.

While you are in there, might consider adjusting the bands as well.

Thanks! I planned on a band adjust while i was in there anyways. Probably just direct swap everything over from the other trans, maybe a cheap shift kit if im dropping the VB, and slam it back together with an adjustment. Im looking at getting this to work as cheap as possible because the long term plan is a 5spd swap. So i dont want to put hundreds into the auto, just want it functional for the short term.

That works too. Just swap the stuff from the other trans then. Clean it up good before installation. (governor solenoid is not self-cleaning.)

When you adjust the bands, tighten them to 72 inch pounds, then back them off two turns. (both of 'em) Ignore the specs in the service manual. (do you have a service manual? If not, get one here.)
