Is a deep cycle battery a good replacement
Hello folks, I love this forum, I've had nothing but intelligent feedback. My battery has gone bad (after 3 years in GA, its due lol) A friend of mine suggested replacing it with a Deep Cycle/ Marine battery. He said they are better at holding charge and withstanding heat/cold, etc. Is this a good Idea? If so, what would be my best deep cycle option? I regularly use my truck for working at night and my LED spotlights drained my current battery regularly. Thanks!
I wouldn't. Best bet is to purchase a regular 12 volt battery with plenty of reserve capacity and a good warranty. I found that deep cycle batteries don't tend to hold up as well in applications where alternators are working to keep the battery fully charged.
Deep cycle batteries are designed to give out amperage over a long period. Not so good when vehicles need amps right away to start in cold weather. That's what CCA means cold cranking amps. I think the stock requirements for the second gens with 5.2/5.9 is like 600-700 CCA.
