Default 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Exhaust Manifold

Hey Guys

I can just imagine how many people have dealt with this headache on the exhaust manifold

Yesterday I dealt with 3 bolts that decided to break off
I got 2 of the 3 out successfully using the Proto Easy Outs and of course the last one didn't cooperate

I finally got it out after fighting with the drill. Did my best to prevent thread damage but some of the lower ones are gone

The Screw will go in and tighten up as it gets deeper but still I'm not going to chance a half fix on this type of work

I got new bolts from the dealership. Now i'm just trying to find a helicoil kit that I can use in this

My understand is the bolt to the rear of the engine is 5/16-18

Information I can find is I need a Thread Repair Kit, 5/16"-18

another one I seen is Thread Repair Kit, M8-1.25

I'm going to assume the 5/16-18 is the one i'm after. Weird part was when I was cleaning threads with my tap it was the M8-1.25 that matched the thread to clean them up nice

So which thread repair kit should I go with here??
It's for the bolt that are at the back of the passenger firewall. Not the studs with the nut

Appreciate any help you guys can offer. Hopefully I don't deal with this again. Replacing the exhaust manifolds with new ones from Dorman

Thanks a bunch

You have new bolts, what is the thread pitch/size on those? Get the thread repair kit that matches.

I dont know. I'm basing it off information I'm finding on forums.
I'm just trying to confirm here on the forums with what I posted
Never done helicoils before, like to know I got all the right information

Call the dealer, they should be able to tell you. Info might be in the service manual too, for that matter. (get one here.) Worst case, take a couple with you, go to the hardware store, they can gauge 'em out for ya.

For anyone's information
For a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L

The helicoil kit required is a 5/16 - 18 length 0.629. For the exhaust manifold bolts

The kit I got came from Stanley. Calgary fasteners was the store I got it from in alberta

Just finished test driving with new manifolds on the truck. Sounds even better than the stock ones
exhaust is fixed and the helicoil worked great

Good luck and happy wrenching
