Default Water Pump failure = oil leak?

I have a 2008 Ram 1500 2wd, 3.7l standard cab with just over 200,000 miles. Scenario; Saturday checked fluid levels etc.. all were good. two days later driving home form work, picked up the rattle under the hood, thought maybe it was the AC compressor bearing. At home popped the hood, found the water pump was the culprit. Also notice a LOT of fresh oil picked up by the belt and thrown around the compartment. Checked the oil, two quarts low. This engine has always been dry as a bone, no oil leaks at all, and little or no oil usage between changes. The only obvious failure is the water pump. I am at a loss as to where the oil may be coming from and how losing a water pump could cause the loss of 2 quarts of oil in 20 miles of driving. Looking for suggestions or possible scenarios to check.
