Default Engine noise

Hi people, I have a 96 ram 2500 with a v10 145000 miles on it. When I start it up it sounds like a ride knock but guess away in seconds. Then makes the same noise when it shifts from 1st and 2nd gear. Any ideas what it could be. Someone told me to use Rotella 15-40 right now I use mobile one 10-30 thanks for any help or suggestions

Welcome to DF!

Your issues sounds awfully familiar. My truck does the same thing. It's lifter rattle, or some variety of valve train noise. I have been researching this for almost two years now, trying to find a fix. I have seen other threads about this on various forums, and some folks have even changed the lifters, but, it doesn't solve the issue. Other threads just end, with no solution. So far, it hasn't caused anything bad on my truck, I have just been dealing with some of it's other issues, before I delve that deep into the motor.

Heavier oil may or may not make a difference....... I haven't tried that yet myself.

Moving this to second gen Ram tech for ya.

Sounds like a typical rod knock issue, Worn bearings or possible partially spun bearing. Does it make the noise at high rpm's (3K or more)?

On mine, it's top end (valvetrain) noise.
