Default Yet another 46RE Thread - Highly confused

Hello all,

I have been doing quite a lot of research on my 01 4X4 46RE (5.9) and the more I read it seems the less I know. I am asking for some assistance.

My issue is this, when driving around 45 and up in OD (4th) the trans will seemingly slip momentarily (rpm increases about 100 and then returns). It will do this also in 3rd. More interestingly is that it seems to do it when I hit a bump. I recently serviced the trans (didn't flush but dropped and replaced the fluid and filter and tightened the bands). On the test drive after the service it seemed ok, but then it came back. I pondered this for awhile until I read a thread about fluid level and thought I should recheck it, sure enough it was low so I added another quart. It seemed to be better but over a short time the "slipping" came back.

I do not drive the truck daily, probably every 2 or 3 days and recently was driving and it seemed worse (would act up ever 5-10 minutes) so I resigned myself to buying a new trans. Well today I took it back out and it wasn't as bad but I got to thinking about the slipping when hitting a bump issue and thought it has to be a fluid issue. Therefore I checked it and it was at the "min" level, so I added another quart bringing it to the "max" level. I took it out and it was better but is still doing it.

So I am back wondering if it is a governor issue or complete trans issue. Any constructive thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try an experiment. Find a nice long, straight road, (paved would be good) and hold steady state speed, right around 50 mph. Then try moving the gas pedal just a bit, in either direction. (more, or less gas.) If your trans does it quick blip, that indicates the throttle position sensor is giving you issues. Replace it, and the problem will disappear.
