SLOW shifting trans
hi guys, I have noticed in this cold weather that my tranny seems to be taking longer to shift into overdrive. is this normal ? truck has 93k on it. Also I noticed that it makes a whistling sound in fist gear when I leave for work in the am. PS. installed a trans go kit about a year ago and was shifting fine all summer. any thoughs or advice? thanks .
Mine is doing the same thing on the taking longer to shift to overdrive, takes about 5 miles then it will shift up. After it is warmed up it will shift fine the rest of the day. Just happens very first thing in the morning. Now if I let it warm up longer(like 20 minutes if that) before leaving, dont have the problem. Just if I start it and go is when it acts the worst.
I have had alot of differant cars do this to me, I am thinking beings overdrive is the last stag in shifting that beings the fluid is cold and thicker that it is taking more pressure to make it shift up. Me myself will just take it easy with it till summer and see if it goes back to normal. If so may just need a good fluid flush and freash fluid and filter.
Waiting to see what everyone else has to say on this, dont think it is a bad issue, but is annoying.

two things I suggest... 1) when your expecting it to up shift into OD, let off the gas and see if it upshifts. if it does, then your tps could be going bad. reason is the tps might be sending a wot signal back to the pcm and it thinks your on it when your not. your mpg will also suffer if this is the case. 2) if the tranny hasnt been serviced, get it serviced asap!
also if you still have the stock tranny cooler on there, get a bigger aftermarket one and ditch the intank cooler.

I changed the tps about 3 months ago, cause the tc kept unlocking.also changed the tc and installed shift kit as well as fuid, filter and band adjustment about a year ago.
what about the trans cooler? the OD unit is the 1st to go because of poor lubrication back there... check out aps's website, they have a lot of updates to the tranny that fix a lot of the problems that the 46re tranny has...
Theres like a TSB about this I think. I think it does it on purpose, mine does the same thing. When its really cold it actually won't **** into OD to keep it from damaging itself. Once it warms up it shifts no problem. Its a build in protection thing I think.

got the same thing happing to me i live close enough to school that it's not warmed up till i get there but when i drive for about 15 min it will start to work again like in the summer. i got a 1996 5.2 2wd.
Found it. TSB OE # 21-06-97.
96-98 Ram Trucks w/Gas engines.
SYMTOM/CONDITION
"At ambient teperatires of -20 C (-5 F) or below, the PCM will electronically inhibit the transmission from shifting into overdrive. This will pretect the transmission from damage if the transmission fluid begins to freeze. In extreme cold climatic regions, this feature can cause customer dissastisfation due to elimination of overdrive and less than optimal fuel economy."
DIAGNOSIS
"The cold weather by-pass kit along with disabling the inhibator feature should olly be incorporated for vehicles used in areas of extended cold ambient tempatures."
Mine does it when its higher then -5 though. I'd say sitting over night at 10 degrees or so, maybe even a bit higher it does it.
