Default 46re trans whine on deceleration

I have an 01 dodge ram 1500 5.9L, the trans makes a whining noise when you let off the gas after going about 25-30 mph. It also makes the noise once you hit about 40 mph and doesn't go away until I'm almost stopped. I've tried turning the overdrive off and it helps but the noise is still there (just gets quieter). Doesn't slip or change gears at random, everything works fine other than the noise. The guy I got the truck from said the trans was rebuilt about 4 years ago, not sure of the mileage when rebuilt.

You sure it isn't your diff(s) making the noise?

The noise goes away if I put it in neutral so I'm pretty sure it not the differential

The tranny will spin somewhat in neutral. I really can't say without being there. HeyYou should chime in. He has a lot of tricks for discussing stuff over the internet

Does the noise change if you get off the gas? Or is it still the same?

HeyYou, mine has been doing this for the past 15,000 miles.. The noise stops when you let up on the gas but starts again on acceleration. I really notice it when the cruise is on as it's always increasing/decreasing down the road. Would it be the rear bearings as it's coming from the back? I hope it's not the pinion bearing..

Figuring out exactly where the noise is coming from would be the first step. If you only hear it at speed, that's gonna be fun.....
