I think you're right. I thought that there would be separate wire for the light, but when I had a GM tank for a temporary fix to hunt down fueling issues, I also had fuel gauge connected so I'm aware of the amount of fuel I have. I knew the GM sensor works the other way around, so when the tank was full the gauge showed empty. And the light was on.
