Exclamation 46RE won't always downshift to 1st

My 2002 Ram 1500 4x4 with a 46RE will not always downshift to 1st when hitting the accelerator or when stopping. Also, often starts out in 2nd. If it sits a day or two seems good for a while. Even when it isn't working correctly while driving, it will then sometimes randomly shift normal for a while. Fluid levels good. It might be revving a bit high before shifting to 2nd.

What rpm is normal for shifting to 2nd?

Is there an online guide on how the components operate together... the:
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
TV Cable
Pressure Regulator Valve
Pressure Control (EPC) Solenoid
Shift Solenoid
Oil Pressure Sensor
etc.

Pretty sure I could figure out exactly which component is faulty IF I understood how it all worked together. And I love to learn...

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Forgot... 5.9L. When it doesn't automatically shift into 1st, manually shifting into first does not work either.

Might need to drop the pan, and see if everything is in the right place..... Auto first, and manual first use different hydraulic paths..... so, if neither wants to work, that isn't a good sign.

You can test the electronics.... Just disconnect the 8 pin connector on the drivers side of the trans, and go for a drive. Keep in mind, it won't have any automatic function at all. You will have to shift manually. If it goes into the gear you tell it to, when you tell it to, then it's just an electronic problem, and changing out the governor pressure sensor/solenoid should solve it. If it still exhibits odd behavior, then its working on rebuild time.
