95 ram v10 rough idle Fixed!
Want to say thank you to all the helpful people here! I have a 95 ram that followed me from Alaska to Western WA. It was my Dad's old work truck and got it for a steal, about 150000 on it. I have known the truck to always have a rough idle once warmed up since I owned it but just lived with it. Sounded like all the other v10 issues Lived with until it started randomly shutting off while driving. Called the dealership but as I have usually found they are less than helpful outside warranty work. I ran the code checker (on/off ignition 3 times) and it would only show a fault 12-battery disconnected within last 50 starts. I only drove locally for short trips while trying to figure out the deal. After a few months and no progress the only code ever thrown was 12 (never did disconnect the battery during this). So after reading various posts on here I tried the deoxit gold terminal cleaner and really cleaned the ECM wiring connector and ECM male end. Took it for a long drive up I5 and could not believe how much better it ran until the ECM got warm on a back road home, died and almost did not start back up. By the time I was able to make it home the truck was down a few cylinders and barley running. Check code again and it showed code 12! I can scratch dirty connector off the list for now. On a whim I thought perhaps the connector could have a loose power wire (code 12) so once it was running again and in closed loop I walked over to the ECM and pushed on the connector. Truck died immediately, no stumble or any thing just shut off and only code 12 showing. When in open loop pushing on the 60 pin connector has zero effect. With the key on in closed loop I was able to push on the connector and hear various relays power on/off after it dies. Had a friend suggest I use freezing spray to test my theory that the connector is the issue. Closed loop freezing 60 pin nothing, closed loop freeze ECM started back up. In my mind I found the problem, not connector but the ECM. So I was about a month into looking for some sort of ECM re-builder or a used ECM someone would accept return on IF my diagnosis was wrong, not being a fan of ebay I called wreaking yards and B&R auto recycling got me one first call out of the south with 187,000 on it (no ICM though darn it) and they would take it back if it didnt work out. So the new used ECM is on its way to me, Im watching a auction to maybe buy a different 3/4 ton in case this doesn't work out and UPS drops off my package. Between waiting for the 97 v10 on auction to come on the block I reinstalled ecm and started the truck, fired on the first key turn and have had almost no issues at all. It runs so smooth I have to rev the engine at stop lights to make sure its still running! So maybe if your truck has come form a really cold state and would see temp changes from-30f to +200f daily for 18 years its the ECM. Looks like the waterproof epoxy can separate from the circuit board allowing water and debris into it, corroding the board and make no-run. Now I can get on to the smaller things that can help her run better but really wanted to join up to say thank you to all the great people on here and share my story. Im not on forums all that often but did allow for direct email in case anyone has a specific question for me. Mileage up to about 8 MPG in the city and used a little over 1/8 tank today going 66 miles highway empty. Thank you Dodge forum, y'all rock!
P.S. 97 v10 with less than 98,000 on auction this month california.hibid.com I have nothing to do with them but the truck looks nice, will need to be over 3000.00 or it wont hit the minimum-FYI. It "sold" last month for 3000.00 but its on the site again so 3000 must not have hit minimum.
