Hey everyone. Lately almost every time i start the truck up in the morning to go to work, shifting from Park to Drive, the transmission really slams into drive. It makes a terrible clank noise, the truck lurches forward harder than usual when shifting an auto into drive. This morning, i tried to shift into neutral first for about 30 seconds, then shift it into drive and it still did the same thing. Tomorrow, i'm going to try going to reverse first, then to drive and see what happens. After work, it'll shift into drive just fine. Only mornings this happens. On level ground too.

For the past year I've always had to back out of my parking spot at home, then to drive. But lately I've been parking so I can just drive straight out without reversing, which is when I noticed it started doing this. I'm lost. Ideas?

 

TV cable sticking? One of the valves in the valve body sticking? That's an RH trans (assuming we are talking about the 95...) so, that leaves out an electronics problem..... When is the last time fluid/filter was changed? Bands adjusted??

I experience this too sometimes in my 96 5.2 but its usually on some incline/decline and it did it before and after I've had my fluid and filter replaced. Shop said the inside of my transmission looked brand new, nothing in the pan, fluid looked pretty decent.

 

so shifting to reverse first, then to drive very first thing in the morning did the trick. It felt like it shifted normal then. I don't have my record sheet in front of me but I believe I had the bands adjusted roughly 20,000-30,000 miles ago and the fluid and filter was changed then also. Half of the fluid was changed a couple months ago when I blew a cooler line.

I appreciate the response. I more than likely won't take it to a dealer, if I decide it needs some attention. I have a great small town shop I'd use.
