Default water pump gasket

I have read conflicting advice whether to use an rtv sealant (or gasket maker) in addition to the formed gasket for the pump. some say that using a sealant will cause leaks and some say that not using a sealant will cause leaks. what say you guys? the internet can give great advice. sometimes it can drive you crazy.
I currently have a leak that "may" be the pump gasket. when I replaced it 10-15,000 miles ago , I did not use a sealant with the gasket.

Never use both unless it's the center head (intake) always use one or the other. I personally like RTV

I like RTV to hold the gasket in place during installation. Make sure both surfaces are sanitary clean before placing it on.

This. Makes life much easier. I just put a very thin coat on both sides of the gasket. Helps seal up some of the irregularities you often find on the sealing surfaces.

Red or Black..... I use the 'high temp' stuff, just for giggles.

thanks, in a couple of wks I will start working on it.
First: I will remove the ac compressor, alt and support bracket (WITHOUT disconnecting coolant system).
Then pressure test the system to confirm no topside leaks (bypass hose, thermostat housing, timing cover gasket).
Will let you know what I find.
