Default 01 ram 4wd grinding

Hey everyone! New to the forums. Just picked up an 01 ram 1500 with 100k miles on the dot. I tested the 4wd and it seems to grind when I try to shift out of it. Particularly low. I simply put it in park go into 4wd, and it goes right in no issues and works great. But when I try going into park to take it out it, park itself grinds. So I just use neutral, but then the transfer case grinds. Not sure what it could be since going into 4wd it works fine.

Sounds like your t-case stucks in neutral. At least my experience has been that if I try to go on 4Lo, and I accidentaly leave it in neutral, only way to get it out is to shut down the engine. If it's grinding while trying to get transmission to park, it means that internals are turning and only way this to happen is when t-case is in neutral.

You need to be in neutral to shift in an out of 4x4 low. You can shift back and forth between 2 hi and 4hi at any speed.

Well, below 55 mph at any rate. (for 4 hi) 4 low WILL grind. especially if you hesitate in neutral. Gotta be moving less than 5 miles an hour, and shift FAST. On the 98 and up trucks, it's a long throw from 4 hi to 4 lo......

Thanks for the tips everyone. Sounds like I need to not go into park when I do it, and do it quickly. I was going into neutral, stopping, then 4 low instead of quickly going across into 4low.
