I have a 1996 V10 2500 Club Cab 2 door long box 8800 GVW Dodge Ram. It was built on a special order from me for a Canadian dealer and I bought it there brand new. It has never had the steering box replaced nor any of the steering components or tie rods etc. The shocks were upgraded to Biltsteins and that made a great improvement in ride and handling.

At 250,000 Klms I am having Moog parts installed to replace the OEM that are still in very good shape but starting to show the tinniest bit of play. At the same time I was doing all the Tie Rods and track bar/stabiliser I was going to replace the intermediate steering shaft as I do not care for the Borgeson unit I installed on it about 4 years ago. It keeps loosening off at the two set screws on the attachment to the steering column, even with Blue Loctite on the set screws and Jam nuts.

BOTH the steering column and Steering Box input shafts, that connect to the intermediate steering shafts are ovals with two flat sides. The steering box is NOT splined on the input shaft. EVERY replacement steering box I can find shows a splined input shaft on the steering box. Has anyone else seen a non-splined steering input shaft on the steering box on any of their Rams? My issue is, all of the replacement intermediate steering shafts from Rock Auto and the like have the steering Column end as an oval with two flat sides and the steering box end with a round splined female socket for the steering box input shaft. The steering box on the truck is still perfectly tight and works great so I son't really want to have to replace a $300 part just so an $80 intermediate shaft will fit on it. I am hooping there is someone who makes the correct intermediate shaft if there were lots of these flat oval steering boxes made. Interestingly, the Borgeson shaft works fine on it and if it wan't for the set screws constantly loosening up I would leave it on because other than that it works great. That isn't just an adapter on the box is it??

 

It doesn't appear to be. I have not pulled the actual box but from what I can see with it still installed it looks like the "DD" style shaft goes into the steering box as one piece,

 

That's odd...... Since you ordered it, and bought it new..... One would think you would know if the box had been replaced at some point in the past. I seem to recall that the input shaft on the box had to be modified to use the borgeson shaft though? May wanna pull it, and have a closer look. Either that, or use loctite Red on the set screws, and jam nuts. (it holds a bit harder.)
