Your engine should be good for quite a while yet. The cheapest and easiest will be another 3.9. The 3.9 is not a hot rod engine but it does pretty good. I've even towed with them in the past. If your particular engine is a dog, look at the timing chain. Both 3.9's I've run needed a timing chain set around 120-140,000 miles. With the V-6, once you pull the fan and shroud, you have a bunch of room to work under the hood. There is also an updated timing tensioner that came out in the late 90's. If your timing chain is worn, once you replace it, you'll find the heater will run you out, the temperature gauge will read where it should and you're mileage will go up substantially with the computer getting out of "open loop" mode. Put a new 195 degree thermostat in while you're at it and you'll really wake the truck up. You won't be winning the drag races but you'll have decent old truck to drive.
