Maybe, maybe not. I had a '97 with a bad failsafe thermostat and it only a code for an O2 sensor.

The older trucks were a lot less sensitive to that. They apparently really didn't care overmuch if the engine didn't get to temp, the 98 and up trucks were a little more picky, 00 and up were a LOT more picky.
