shifting woes (and some strang noise too)
95 ram 15 5 spd. i cant get the thing to shift smooth no matter how much i drain on that clutch, it always dropr into gear whe i finally get it all the way out. the only one i can even get close to smooth is 4th to 5th, at highwy speed. i admit i havent driven a truck with a stick in about a year and a half, but id think that i would be able to get something better than i can.
it doesnt feel or sound like the u joints are bad... anyone have an opinion?
also, it makes this kinda whining sound. maybe not enough gear lube?

Check the gear lube. Get a manual and check the free play in the clutch pedal, or have it checked. U should be able to "match gears" while driving, as in shift without the clutch like u do in a big truck. ( 3-4 shift should be the smoothest, just pull out of 3rd while letting off the gas and smoothly shift to 4th w/no clutch. ) It might take a couple tries to get this but when u do there should be no grinding, etc. I'm guessing your clutch is getting worn and gear lube needs changed. Go with synthetic if u change it
What about fluid for the clutch? If it's has a hydrolic clutch that could be part of the problem. I had that happen before to a used car I bought, all it needed was fluid and the problem was fixed. Air got into the line so I had to bleed it, pretty much like you do with breaks.
thanks for the tips. the clutch seems tight enough. it grabs right away and holds right to the floor. i think the previous owner must have had it replaced at some point. (the truck does have 250k on it) he maybe just didnt get it adjusted correctly after he did it. i did notice that the pedal rides a little higher than usual...
