Default OD to 1st kick down trouble 46rh

trans is working fine at start, shifting through gears till OD is achived. after comming to a complete stop somethimes it would not shift back to 1st. adjusted the bands changed the fluid new filter, still nothing. Now i'm taking out the valve body. not finding any visible problem (metal shaving) or junk the ball in the body seem to look like brass or cooper, not chrome. is this normal or is it need changing.

thanks in advance

I've seen the valve bodies come with steel ***** and/or composite [plastic,yellowish/green colr] *****, I doubt that is your problem. Most likely your lock up solonoid is not venting. Check the solonoids that are mounted to the valve body for plugged orifice screens or a leaking solonoid gasket. You will need to remove the solonoids to do this. If the screens or orifice is plugged, your better off just to replace the solonoid assembly. The solonoid could be sticking also or have an electrical problem somewhere. Make sure your brake pedal lite switch is good,it should kick the tranny out of od when you press on the brake pedal. The VSS [vehicle speed sensor, mounted on the side of tranny, check the electrical plug for a good connection] should disengage the od at any speed below 25mph, could be the tps [throttle position sensor] also but I doubt it's that. While you have the valve body off, check all the springs for the valve body valves to make sure you don't have a broken one-I doubt that you do.If its none of the above, you probably have a non repairable failure of the valve body or tranny od unit failure or bad pcm[doubt that tho]. Good Luck with it.

What gear does it stay in when you come to a stop?

im thinking it is staying in OD. if i go only to third or second it will drop into first at a stop. manuly it shifts fine.

I dunno tranny's really at all....but if it shifts manually fine couldn't it be the OD soleniod not working right?

As far as the trans not going into drive will the shifter move into drive? if not I'd guess the mannual valve in the vb is stuck. I had a 46re do the exact same thing bumped up the tv pressure and the problem went way. just a suggestion.

everything was working fine till i pulled the valve body off and try to install it. i was told by a friend of mine that i schould have had the whole truck in the air , not just the front end. he said that i may have needed to rock the back wheels to get the valve body to fit in correctly. i"ll try it again soon.
