the manual shows both the 5.2 and 5.9 available in the 2500 light duty (that's not to say any were sold with the 5.2). my VIN shows the 5.9 in this truck. the RPO sticker does not appear to exist in this truck for me to tell what transfer case and transmission came in this truck, but what research Ive been able to do on such an old truck implies they are shared with the 1500, not the 2500HD (not that I'm not wrong). is there an easy-ish way to tell which transmission and transfer case I have?

Chat with the dealer, see if you can get a build sheet. You can try going here, and feeding it your vin, and see what comes up, but, supposedly, it doesn't support anything older than 98. (but, I was able to pull the build sheet for my 96 2500......)

It also lists a 241 t-case, and you say you have a 231? I suspect its NOT the original engine/trans..... It states "manual transmission" but, doesn't specify WHICH manual trans..... Bummer.

But, that suggests that an NV4500/NP241 would be a direct swap.

If you aren't sure the trans is actually bad..... jack up the rear, support it on jackstands. Put the trans in neutral, t-case in some variety of 4x4, grab the FRONT driveshaft, and see how much slop there is before it starts influencing the REAR driveshaft. Should also be able to feel if anything in there feels 'crunchy'......

my research was saying np231/nv3500, I've been trying to find a way to confirm what I actually have. the 5.9 was easy to confirm, the transmission and transfer case, along with light duty vs heavy duty have been more difficult to definitively determine. I don't have 4 jackstands, but I'll have to try to figure something out tomorrow. I wonder if my jack will even jack this thing up... on ice and snow, nonetheless...

Two jackstands will be adequate. Just don't have the engine running when you put the t-case in gear. (no vacuum, no locked front diff. )

The build sheet I pulled from dodge said 5.9, manual trans, 241 transfer case. It also said GVWR was 8650.... which makes it a light duty 3/4 ton..... (I would stick with the 7500 pounds on the door label though. The TRUE 'tell' of HD vs. LD, is axles. If you have the corporate 9.25 in the back, that is LD, if it's a D60, that's heavy duty. I don't know if the LD 3/4 tons used full-floating axles in the back or not.....

No full floating just the 9.25
