TRUCK USING OIL AND STALLING?
HATE to sound dumb ,but i have been reading over some post and see were the "tb" needs to be cleaned regular and i have 130 thousand on my 97 dodge ram ss/t,but it dont seem to come to me what the "tb" stands for.Can someone go ahead and tell me what this stands for because i am drawing a blank---my truck started hesitating when idoling and did it a couple of times going down the highway like it was going to stall--the check engine light has been on and off for years, but i changed the tranmission fluid and filter and it went off but still the same problem--i dont think it is the cat because i had it changed at around 100 thousand---it seems to be using oil for the first time,it has went a quart low on the dipstick with no obvious leaks but there is black soot in the tail pipe that leads me to believe it is leaking internally--any help would be appreciated, thanks
stands for throttle body. the plenum could be leaking causing it to use oil. pull the TB off the intake and look down and see if there is any oil pooling on the bottom of the intake. if there is, then it's leaking. you will see an oil film on everything, that is normal.
take the IAC off the TB and clean it up real good. Using Throttle body/carb cleaner, spray down the TB where the IAC valve seats and make sure the air passage is clear too.

there are many things that could be wrong. the plenium leaking would be a good weekend project you can do in your driveway and is probably the cause of your oil consumption. you realy dont even need to pull the throtle body though. just take the air hat off and open the TB and shine a flash light in there. If it is the plenium there will be more than just a film, seeing as how the PCV valve is prone to allow oil to get into the manafold. Over 130k miles this to will cause the inside of the manafold to look as though there is a leek. So what you are looking for is a small pool on the bottom of the manafold. If this is not the issue change your oil and see if it is milky. If so you have a head gaskit leak. Hope this is not the case.
As for the stalling....at 130k miles if you still have the origional cat converter its probably clogging up. ever have a funky smell comming from your truck after its been running?
