I mean for my buddy, the Toyota will do more than anything he'd ever want. He rides a desk for a living, doesn't tow/haul much. I agree though that the Toyota is a very spartan vehicle when compared with the very nice new interiors and ride comfort of the rams.

I'm not sure if I think Tony is totally right. I seem to recall finding a thread somewhere discussing how he was wrong about the way the lifters were oiled, but that was a couple months ago and I can't recall for sure.

I just don't see how they can fail other than oil starvation

Bad metal quality in the lifter perhaps.

Metal fatigue? Seems it's the lifters that fail, then they take out the cam....... Its usually lifters toward the back of the motor as well, and I do believe they get oil first...... or is the pump at the front of the motor? Would a high volume pump make any difference?
