I dont want mine to break or overheat so what upgrades should i get and im not trying to burn my wallet. Im already going to get a second expensive cooler with a fan on it and delete tge bypass valve in the line going to the radiator and put all new atf+4 in it with new filter and all. But should i get shift kits or upgrades of that asort ive seen this is the cheapest one(46re 47re 48re Solenoid Upgrade Kit Dual Pack Solenoids Governor Pressure Speed Sensor Electronics by Oregon Performance Transmission
$178.49
Oregon Performance Transmission) and it says itll make the trans better then stock and replaces some sensors and a spring, but is that going to make the trans last longer or just a waste of money i could spend on gas? Are the upgrades i said i already am doing good enough? The truck will have some big tires on it eventually so account for that too. I dont tow anything besides i might tow a small trailer with. Jet ski or small camper but nothing near the tow capacity.

I'm in same boat as you. I went to big tires and noticed a big difference right away. I installed a tru cool aftermarket tranny cooler. A b&m deep transmission pan to allow more fluid. And a gauge to monitor transmission heat. Now I swap ped out to 4.10 gears. I haul a little camper and my quad in the back. Next thing I want to do is build the transmission. I suggest the deep pan alone and better cooler it's a nice upgrade

Well I’ve ran into a problem with my 46re I can’t figure out how to get the gear it’s in to line up with what the dash reads I’ve tried by lining it up in p and n but it always seems to not line up right all the bushings in the linkage on the trans are very worn looking and stretched out the truck has a body lift and I’m thinking it’s the bushings because the linkage was extended for the body lift but I’d like to be able to go into 1st again basically everything is one over besides park works in its own area. Do you guys think it’s just the bushings are putting play in it or I gotta fab up a bracket to fix the angles because the one part that goes from the body to the trans is at a good amount of angle not flat.

What year is your truck? Do you have the 5 wire P/N switch?

It’s an 01 ram 1500 4x4 auto, I don’t think it has 5 pin I’ll have to check

Went looking for in the 01 service manual..... and can't find it...... Which strikes me as REALLY bizarre. It doesn't show up in the instrument cluster wiring diagrams at all. Doesn't seem to be in transmission controls either..... Would help if I had a clue what Dodge actually called it.... (so I could find it in the index.....) Diagrams show the p/n switch, but, zero detail on it. Not real helpful.....

Does yours have the little cable from the part of the column that moves, that goes to the PRNDL???

I was going to say that's probably their issue. Mine stretched at some point and didn't quite line up so we took the little ring on the end and bent it in half to take the slack out of the cable and it worked long enough to pass inspection and still hasn't been an issue

yup I checked that cable out when I took the dash out for evap and heater cores and I found the cable and the plastic piece it was connected to broke off the Colum so that explains it

Sure cure kit is always a good idea imho it stope
most things from going wrong before they ever happen:

depending on budget you could always just have it rebuilt into or swapped with a mega viper trans from PATC:

I remember reading in another thread that all the parts used in the PATC viper trans are available to be able to rebuild it yourself. I’ll see if I can dig it up again.

i just purchased a core 46RE transmission myself the other day so that I can take my time and rebuild it without a rush and kinda do the same thing as you I want to TAKE. MY. TIME. And completely rebuild it and make it as bulletproof as possible so that I can 1. Learn everything about these transmissions and 2. Be able to obviously have a good transmission lol so I’ve been researching rebuild kits myself a lot lately as well.
