Default ignition question

what sensor controls the ignition advance and what would cause it to fluctuate from 12degrees to 20degrees at idle?

the timing is controlled by the PCM and is not adjustable. It will jump all over the place at idle... not sure why but this is what ive seen on my truck (and apparently yours) and have been told by experts.
