Default HS 1.7 roller rockers

I just got a set of these yesterday for my 2001 1500 3.9l. Any pointers or suggestions from people who have already done this would sure be appreciated, I'm headed to get some break in oil to soak them in overnight.

From all the commentary I’ve seen on installing H&S, I think you have the biggest tip... soaking them overnight.

Yeah the directions say to soak them overnight in oil that has zinc. I have been running oil with zinc since I put them in but that might be overkill.

Yet surprising how many don’t, then complain about noisy rockers.

I guess the tip is “follow the directions”

You gotta at least look them over. Especially on this kind of thing.

Yeah, I couldn't find any break in oil around here so I just got some cheap non detergent oil and a zinc, phosphorus additive and rolled my own. HS recommends soaking the rockers and running break in oil for the first 1000 miles or so.

I would replace the valve springs and seals if it was mine. And would prefer a better spring then stock. But at least new stock springs.....

The springs and seals have around 60 to 70k on them so I'm guessing they'll be ok for a while.

And they may be..... But let me explain my way of thinking on this......
Rock auto has the springs, Melling $1.72 each. so it would be $27.52 for a set. Seals, for Mahle are $8.31 So it would cost $35.83 and shipping to replace.

Now, the factory spring has a closed height of 1.64 in. and a fully colasped height of 1.163 in. so you only have .477 difference.
With 1.7 rockers you will increase the lift from .417 to .443 (this is based off of lift numbers from melling)
That is only leaving .034 travel in the spring.....
The standard spring has a closed pressure of 85 lbs and 200 open.
Keep in mind these are all new figures. ie. springs get weak with use and time.

With the 1.7 rollers, the motor should pull a little more on top end, and the last thing you want is a weak spring that will allow float.

If you have a compressor and especially if you are replacing spark plugs, its not a lot more work to replace the springs and seals.
JMO but it would be money well spent.....

Thanks, that's good info to have. I don't have a spring compressor so I think I'll just go with these for now.
