FYI, I have a backup factory 7 way trailer harness and connector. I took a couple of photos of it so you can see the wiring and their colors. The wires are split into two connectors - one 3 wire and the other 4 wire.
I know this thread is old but do you have a part number or still have the 7 way plug with the 2 connectors on it? I have been searching for one and have had no luck

I do not have a part number for that setup. I changed the 7 pin plug with an aftermarket unit and re-used the factory wiring harness. I keep this setup as a spare in case I have an issue with the one on my truck. I'd suggest finding one the same way I did - grab one off a 2nd gen Dodge Ram truck that has a factory trailer hitch from a pick and pay salvage yard.

Sounds good man. I appreciate it just got one more question. Does all the 2nd gen trucks with the factory 7 way connector hook up the same? I went yesterday to a yard and the one I found have a rectangle connector attached directly to the 7 way connector. Is that one more common than the other or is there a difference depending on what year you have? I may have not traced the wires far back enough either to find the 2 separate connectors.
To my knowledge, 2nd gen trucks that came with a factory installed towing package have this type of wiring. I believe that there are aftermarket wiring setups that use the one-plug connector setup with 7 wires in it. You can find several of those on eBay.

Today on lunch I went back to the local yard and actually found one off of a 96 or 97 1500 I believe. Charged me a whole $8 lol. Now I just need to make sure everything works once I hook it up! This thread saved me from having to splice in an aftermarket connector and confirm I did have the towing package from the factory. Much appreciated @Atomic Dog
Glad it worked out for you, as it had for me. I grabbed an entire trailer hitch off the frame and the 7 pin connector plus wiring of a 2nd gen Dodge truck at a local pick and pay yard several years ago to replace the original rusty trailer hitch on my truck. When I was at the yard, I noticed several Dodge 2nd gen trucks with the exact same setup, some in better shape than others.
