Default John Deere HyGard fluid in 46/47RE?!

I was conversing with a fellow 2nd Gen owner who claims to run his 47RE with John Deere HyGard which literary left me speechless. Has anybody ever heard of this..insanity? I’d never in a million years attempt to run anything BUT Mopar ATF+4 in my. 46RE.

Only ever ran ATF+4 wasn't Mopar brand though. I did also use some thick oil when I knew it was going just to get me by until the weekend

The john deere stuff is hydraulic fluid. Good for hydrostatic transmissions and such. I wouldn't run anything other than ATF +4 in my dodge trans.

what do you mean by “thick oil” an additive, or engine oil? 😳

Agreed! Also, what do you think about coolers? I currently have a 30,000 GVWR cooler on mine, but I want a 40,000 one instead. Is it an overkill, is there such thing as “too cool”? I don’t tow or haul at all. Literally the only “cargo” in the cab is myself or a passenger.

An additive and motor oil. Only because I knew it was going bad and just had to make it to the weekend. That was in a 98 Durango with a 360

Then even the 30K cooler is overkill. Is that a 'bad thing'? I don't think so. Heat is what kills your trans. But, over-cooling doesn't help it either. Think I would go for a trans temp gauge before upgrading the cooler. You likely don't need it.

Do you still think it’s an overkill if my climate is extremely hot? *cough cough* Texas. 😂

What might be a better idea is running a 180 stat instead of the 195. That will lower the running temp of both engine and trans.

It do get warm there.

Install the gauge, see what temps look like, go from there.
