check valves

Default check valves

my a/c has the usual problem of changing to defrost on acceleration and went to check on the check valves but i only have the one at the manifold which seems to be working fine
but the one that should be at the firewall is not there so what is it there to do why is there 2 check valves?

I think the second one was added later, or as part of a service bulletin, or some such. The idea is to isolate the HVAC, from the rest of the vacuum system. (except, perhaps, from the vacuum reservoir under the cowl there. )
