Solenoid is a solenoid. I don't think anything changed on those over the years, aside from possibly the connector inside the trans.

If the trans temp light is coming on, you won't get O/D. That's a failsafe built into the programming. How long after a cold start does the temp light come on?

Pressure sensor and solenoid changed, as did the retainer for the solenoid. Only the connector changed on the tcc/od solenoids.

That was the symptoms of my issue as well. Also, both transmission lines going to the radiator were cold to the touch after the short drive, so the transmission was in no way overheated. The overdrive would kick out/off 1st (light on the overdrive switch would come on) and then right behind it, the trans temp light would come on. Sounds like you have an electronic mismatch of parts on your valve body that are not compatible with your PCM/year of truck. My rebuilder put the late model electronic parts in my 1996 46RE 4x4 transmission, since that's what was available to him at the time and he didn't think it made a difference, in addition to him trying to get the transmission back to me to get the truck off my friend's lift. He did use a Borg Warner solenoid, which was physically larger in diameter than the one he removed. I had to help him modify the hold-down plate to accommodate the larger solenoid and cut off one side of the plate that turned upwards into a U. He came to my house and swapped out the parts with the correct parts and all is good now.

Yeah, that's an electronics mismatch. Got the wrong parts in the trans.

Guess I will replace it myself can't afford to bring it back to the shop and it take another 2 weeks for them not to do it. Any pointers on doing it myself

Pretty easy. Just drop the pan, pull the filter, and there they are. It may have the wrong retainer clip in it though... so watch out for that. I would like to think any trans shop should be able to get you the right one.
