If you've got a plasma you can cut a door like the old-school flannel "onesy" pajamas in the posterior. Peel open, knock everything out, push it shut and weld it back up with low heat and .023.
Bonus points if there's a heat shield that's tacked in place because once you tack that back on and a little rust and dust accumulates it looks completely untouched.
You'll pass a visual with flying colors.

Actually, it's a violation of federal law to defeat/remove emissions control devices. (federally mandated.....) That said, if you don't have testing or inspections, then running without one really isn't much of a legal risk. I don't think I have EVER heard of anyone getting ticket, or even so much as stern look, for not having a cat....... Not like the cops are going to crawl under your truck, and look around. Just not something they are concerned with.
My GMC Safari has 359,000 miles on it. Original cat as far as I know, it would have had to have been changed before 100,000 if it is not original. Is the cat doing what it's supposed to? Have no idea. All I know is it runs good and fuel economy is as good as it has ever been.
