Default catalytic converter

2001 5.2 130,000 miles. Does the Cat need to be replaced with 130,000 miles. What would be a good replacement for gas mileage. IF Cat is removed and test pipe install will that help with mileage without throwing codes, back fires, and without being loud until new Cat is installed

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Are you having issues that make you think the cat is faulty?

Now, we have a '98 where the exhaust just slowly deteriorated. One of our volunteer mechanics just let the secondary O2 hang in open air.....it never threw a code even though that sensor wasn't in warm exhaust flow.

If you want to delete the cat (for offroad use only of course), you can use something like this
https://smile.amazon.com/Upower-Univ.../dp/B078WRNDYG

You'll need to add a bung for the pre-cat O2

No issues, just heard that they only last 100,000 to 130,000

Since it isn't causing a problem, don't fix it.

"Test pipes" are illegal. Not only is removing a Federal offense, it will probably freak your computer out. I had Midas put a low flow unit on my GMC and if anybody ever inspects it, it has a converter. On the early ones, I've seen guys drop the beads but that technology isn't used anymore.

The previous owner of my truck hollowed out the catalytic converter on my truck. In order to be legal, I installed the Magnaflow direct fit catalytic converter on my truck. I haven't had any issues with it in the 7 years it's been on my truck.

That being said, if your catalytic converter isn't broke, don't "fix" it.

Don't listen to whoever told you that. They are not wear parts that require periodic replacement.

There is some bad and/or incorrect advice going on here.

The cats on these trucks do go bad early. In fact, there was a massive recall back in the early 2000s for cats. My first one died just over 100k. I switched to Magnaflow and had two last the next 150k. After my third cat died last summer, I threw it away and installed the Jegs Y-pipe. Not only does it sound better, it runs way better too. It is tuned for better flow and scavenging and has the sensor bungs ready to go. Just yesterday I took a trip over the Cascade mountains. The truck had more power than I've ever felt and easily cruised at 72mph when it used to struggle to keep 70. Overall I got 15mpg which is great for that speed, my tires, and having over 272k.

Your truck will run better if using a high performance cat like Magnaflow or Flowmaster, and best if removed completely. It's basic engine performance 101. We have no testing here so I can run whatever exhaust I want. Nothing "illegal" about it. If you want to spend the money for a new cat, get the Magnaflow. If not, cut it off whenever you want. You can thank me later.

Actually, it's a violation of federal law to defeat/remove emissions control devices. (federally mandated.....) That said, if you don't have testing or inspections, then running without one really isn't much of a legal risk. I don't think I have EVER heard of anyone getting ticket, or even so much as stern look, for not having a cat....... Not like the cops are going to crawl under your truck, and look around. Just not something they are concerned with.

I'd be willing to bet over half the cops don't even know where the cat is or what it looks like lol
