Default Cap/camper shell/topper interchangeability

I'm curious if anyone has tried to fit a 3rd gen cap on a 2nd gen truck. Specifically on an 8 ft bed. Despite my searching I'm having a hard time finding pictures and info about this. I realize it won't be a perfect fit but would it be close enough for the less discerning?

Funny this came up as I'm trying to find a topper for a '00 short bed.

This might help you, he takes a long time to get to Dodges:

And at the risk of hijacking, if anyone knows what other apps work with a short bed I'd love to know. From my measurements I need 80" long. I've found some for short bed Fords but they're 84"

Thanks. I've come up with this as well.

Doesn't help much considering the curves and body lines of different trucks, but may be helpful in finding a more universal "commercial" style cap, designed with built in tool boxes and the like.

I know a bed cover from a 3rd gen will fit a 2nd gen, birth being short beds.

where are you from? I seem to find tons of short bed caps in my area. Anything long bed seems difficult to find around here.
