Default dual or single exhaust,

I've been looking at getting dual exhaust on my 01 5.2 Ram. I have had a few people tell me to run a single 3" pipe from the converter to the muffler and not to bother with twin pipes.They're saying that I will get better performance this way.
Is this true?

Most articles I have ever read on the subject do confirm that on motors that join the exhaust before the cat via a y-pipe or similiar (like the Rams do) you see a little better performance by keeping the exhaust single the rest of the way out. I think it has to do with losing velocity when you split the flowing exhaust after it passes the cat and/or muffler. The performance differences aren't enormous (maybe only a few hp), but every little bit helps in my opinion.

If you want duals, true duals are probably the best way to go (single exhaust out on each side). It is somewhat difficult on the Ram due to location for the drivers side exhaust, o2 sims, 1 cat or 2, etc..., but not imposible, and probably the best for performance and sound.

I much prefer duals as I think they look a ton better. If as single exhaust I would rather have the stock one even if it is louder as after market single exit exhaust just don't look right to me.

I have the dual 2.25" out 50 series flowmaster and performance is great with it. when i put on the kit, it was originaly 2.5" duals which lost way too much low end for my liking (killed my gas milage). knecked it down to 2.25" which is close but slightly larger flow area then a single 3" and it runs awesome that way.

I have JBA ceramic coat headers and a JBA Evol exhaust system. Removed the JBA muff after a few weeks (clamped on) and put a flowmaster super 40 on. Holy cow - it sounds perfect. With the JBA muff it sounded good on accel, but not idle/rev. With the super 40 it sounds good on idle AND rev (sounds awesome). It's a 3' s/s cat-back with the super 40 clamped on (in case i ever want to reinstall the JBA).

I don't know how much more a dual flows than a 3' cat-back, but I've seen some 300+ rwhp vehicles with a single 3' back and that's all I need to know.

The duals look cool, but I don't think it's required....

By the way, I also have the magnaflow hi-flow cat from justmagnaflow.com and I think a good hi-flow cat makes a WORLD of difference....

The only "true" dual I've seen for these trucks is thru gsmotorsports.com and it looks like a "non-cat" w/o2 sense system. I don't know if I'd want to do that on my "street" truck. Stay with the hi-flow cat (magnaflow makes a great one w/ factory o2 bungs) and a dual or single out.

W/ the hi-flow cat, 3' single i/o or 2' dual and a good sounding muff (depending on your preference), you'll be happy.
