Default Engine swap/ 5.9 rebuild

Ok so I’m going to begin my process this week. I know I have 3rd gens but I have the 5.9/46re

so silver truck is my daily. Has 158k and has a bad tick I can’t diagnose. I need my truck so I bought the black truck last week (146k) drove it onto trailer, runs great but frames broke, got it for $400 with clean title.

so engine in black truck is going in my silver truck and engine in silver truck I will be building. I do all my own work so there shall be many pictures to come. I’m going to bump compression with new pistons to 10:1, going to do cam (haven’t decided which) and everything related, pretty much beef it up.

The spare tranny I have with black truck I’m sending to a trans guy I deal with at my shop who’s going to beef it up so it can handle the new engine……my thought process is this I have $400 in a parts truck that has a spare one of everything. I spend 5-6k to beef tranny/ engine it’s still way cheaper than a new truck. And like I said I do my own work and have access to a shop so I won’t have any real labor costs minus trans work….

this will be an eventful thread. Much to come

Shouldn't be shot at only 158k unless ran dry. What have you done to diagnose the tick so far?

ive done everything I can without tearing it apart….I want to build the engine anyways and now I have a spare to go in for the mean time

I have a recent thread on the tick, to much to re explain.

and yes, once on way to work about 8 months ago Im coming to a stop downhill and I lose oil pressure check gauges comes on, once truck leveled oil psi came back, checked oil and there was about 1 quart in it…..found I had hole in timing cover. The 4 quarts were gone in 2k miles, the pulley slung it around so I never saw a puddle and only leaked while running….it’s since been fixed but about 6-7 weeks ago the tick came into play and has gotten much worse

Oh, I see. Wow, so you're gonna replace the engine twice? That'll be fun.

i work in a shop, I have the means to get it done very easily. And I want to be able to take my time to build engine, not rush it, so the spare engine will give me that time. And these engines are gravy to replace. Can have it pulled in 3 hours….I’ve done a couple

haha that would be nice, I live in maine so everything is usually rusted or seized and I already know judging by looks the manifolds will probably leave me with a broken bolt or 5…..

Wish your shop was on the other side of the country. My truck has no rust and would love a new engine someday with big power.

these are pics from last winter when I built my Harley…rebuilt entire engine with many upgrades, and I re painted it. ALL done by me, only thing I didn’t do was machine heads, and hone cylinders. I built this from ground up….now it’s my trucks turn
