How much Snow

RE: How much Snow
I don't think you can specify a snow depth that you can go through. Packed vs. powder. Tire type, size, etc. Lifted or not. If so how much. Too many variables. I just put a set of BFG AT T/A's on my ride and I just drive around until I "feel" like I might get stuck. So far, I haven't. I also exercise judgement. If its unfamiliar terrain or road conditions, if I can't back out, I don't go in.

ya, being 17 and inexperianced and i admit to that i just dont wanna push my judgement/capabilities of truck
aside from that, a mudding story Quad tho, not truck
i took the quad mudding thru some iced over holes my friend got stuck in and he couldnt even back out but i could w/ mine,
but all my wheels lock and turn, sportsman 500 h.o. mossy oak camo colored. i didnt back out like a wimp though i kept pounding
forward until the ice was aside enough and i could get thru, i was rocking the thing soo hard side to side to bust that ice away
now that was a sweet experience, jsut thought i would share

RE: How much Snow
I'm in Keystone, Colorado right now, and it has been snowing here almost consistantly for the past 3 weeks. The thing that gets me the most is the ice. Slush is somewhat of a problem if your tries can't handle it (which mine really can't at the moment), and powder is just like driving in sand - which I do a lot of where I'm from in Texas. The trick with any of it is to keep your tires spinning... Once you are moving, even slowly, do not allow your tires to come to a complete stop. This is what causes the most problems...
And as far as the most, well, I went over what I though was about an inch or two of powder on a parking lot, it turned out to be about 10"s of old packed snow that had an icy top layer. Even with my 275/60s, I easily slipped through. And not having mud grips or 4 wheel drive (not to mention getting stopped since I was caught by surprise) I decide to just back out of it and take another route.
Oh, one thing that you should do your best to remember if you ever take defensive driving (for a ticket, or insurance, or otherwise) is that pumping your brakes is more effective than just slamming them. ABS does that for you, but I don't have ABS, so I get to do alot of pumping up here, haha... The oversize wheels and tires don't help that either...
On another, somewhat related note. Has anyone run those new Goodyear Futura w/ TripleTread? I have the Assurance based version on my '95 Trep and, man, those things are the best tires you can have in my opinion.. I was just waiting for them to make the big enough for trucks, and well, now they do. The only thing, the biggest I have heard is 18" rims? Is that true? As many Rams are on the road, 20"s is becoming a standard, but still, not many tread patterns are available in that size unless you go with the lo-pro exotic look... I have a set of 3rd Gen Ram 20"s, and the tires need changing soon. I really want the Futuras, but I don't want to go back to the smaller rims now...
Oh, by the way, those Goodyear Assurances w/ the TripleTread are all over up here, so obviously I'm not the only one who thinks they got it right... Hopefully the Futura will be just a succesful...

RE: How much Snow
I have ABS but i dunno how good it works lol ive only felt it kick in a couple of times and it didnt feel very strong, our LHS will stop ur foot and pretty muchh fight u back and win when ABS on, works really good, and on my truck its little bit weaker but i feel it once in awhile

RE: How much Snow
is it the ABS that is weak or is it the brakes themselves? I don't think ABS can be weak. Anyway, I totally agree with the LHS comment. My 'trep has almost twisted my ankle fighting me when I had to hit it one time. I stopped in almost no time though, which was what I wanted, so I was alright with a sore ankle... It's better than a broken neck any day...
