Setting timing to Top dead center or “TDC”

No i did not pull the distributor


i did how ever clean my pistons and cylinder walls. As I did that I kept an eye on the #1 cylinder. It was at its full compression stroke when it was at this line in the picture below. It looks like it is the zero mark? As it’s between two 10s?




I also rotated the crankshaft until the v8 marks and I found that this v8 mark is when the #1 cylinder has finished its compression stroke and being decompressed a little bit.

I’m assuming when I do my timing cover gasket and timing chain that when I set the tdc I will be using the Zero mark instead of the v8 mark on the harmonic balancer?

When you do the chain turn the crank (timing cover off) and line up the dots on the gears. This way you wont have to move either when you put the new one on.
