Default Brake help

Gentlemen,

Been battling my drum brakes for far too long. First time doing drums, and I made a multitude of mistakes/poor assumptions to get where I’m at, so just know that going in.

My truck is a 98. I replaced the rear axle with one out of a 2000. I did superficial research that told me this would work, and for the most part it did. Axle is all bolted in. The brakes have some small differences that are throwing me for a loop. The parking brake strut is different, and I lost/threw away on accident the spring that tensions the cable inside the drum. I cannot find the part anywhere online and every single diagram and video I have found, including the service manual on this site, omits the spring. Looking for the cable itself also has been fruitless in showing/referencing this spring. Does anyone have a lead on a picture or a part number or something that can lead me in the right direction?

I have the strut spring off the 98, but I don’t think it will work, or I cannot figure out how to manipulate it properly. Thoughts? My next step is to the junkyard to reference another vehicle, which I am hoping to avoid as it will be the fourth trip.

Based upon Post #3, can you tell us what you're needing?

unfortunately what I need is still buried behind the rest of the hardware. Post 7 describes my exact issue though - and it looks like his solution was to swap backing plates rather than my route which attempts to rig the parking brake strut and spring itself.

I took a look at the remaining new style I have here and all I'm seeing for additional springs is the spring on the parking brake cable itself? Those are sold on/with the cables

Also in the interest of terminology, I know the "strut" as the bar up top that runs front to back with an "H" at either end.

The lever that actually gets pulled by the cable itself I'd call the parking brake arm or parking brake lever.

Not striving to be pedantic, just want to be sure what we're talking about?

Also all the backing plates have a dummy nub for cable entry front AND back.

If you want to retain the older cable style on the '00 rear just drill the nub and plug the front hole. I doubt hole diameter is even that critical, get -0.00/+0.0625" and you'll be fine.

I still think you can swap ALL the '98 components onto the '00 backing plate, although I never did ACTUALLY try that.

I kinda like servicing the older style more, it just seems more straightforward -- although either works.

I ended up swapping the backing plate. I think it’s gonna work…

He was talking about the parking cable spring. I can also comment that the spring DOES NOT come with new cables.

Are you speaking of the green spring in your pic?

edit: I see now that new cables no longer include the LONG spring that slides over the cable itself. The last time I purchased new cables for a 2nd Gen they were included, but that was circa 2014. Dodge discontinued the part in '15.

You would be correct, I'm unsure if the spring is really needed or not.
