Default Hello Again

Its been a few years since I've been on here, I havent had a dodge, I switched to Chevy since then haha. Although I'm about to get another 98 ram with a 5.9 magnum. The current owner is saying its not getting spark at the ignition coil, well I have a spare ignition coil from one of my other five dodges from years ago. Question is, would simply replacing the ignition coil solve that or am I looking at more of a wiring problem?

It's probably a cam or crank sensor but since you have the coil, it's just some time to try it. If the crank sensor isn't working, it won't tell the computer to fire the ignition. If you swap coils, you at least eliminate that. I've only replaced one that failed over the years.

Current owner said he replaced the computer and crank position sensor and it ran for a week before it lost spark.

What brand crank sensor? They are not all created equal. It might be that the sensor was indeed the problem, but, the 'new' one, was either a bit too long, or improperly installed, and the flywheel it reads eventually took it out.

Good to see you're still around and helping! Thank you, should I just try sourcing a Mopar crank sensor or is there a certain brand I should look for? I work at a Ford dealer parts department now so I can find any brand.

Mopar would be best. Keep in mind, those fellers are a major pain to change.

Oh I remember haha, I'll get one coming so I can swap it out this weekend. Thanks, I'll update later this weekend with the results.

Get a Mopar one for both the crank and/or cam sensor. Being a Mopar guy I've never have gotten a good one from the box stores or Napa (I consider a box store). Some lasted a few weeks but crapped out. I have yet to see a Mopar one not work unless you pull the trans.

Update: got the truck home….the ignition coil wasn’t plugged in…jumped it with my other truck and it started right up. 174k on the crack free dash. Only rust is on the back bumper and passenger doors. This thing is mint. Ac even works. I basically stole this truck 😂

Ill post pictures tomorrow morning.
