Started truck this morning and rpms went to 2k. Slowly worked down to 1k but then after idling it for awhile rpms went sporadic bouncing between 200 and 1k. Started driving to work making a turn I lift throttle and it died. This afternoon "much warmer " it was doing same thing except dying. Smells rich running really rough. Am I on the right track looking at choke or air idle control.

 

Quite possibly TPS. The bouncing idle once warmed up is a common symptom.

 

You don't have a choke. F.I. engines go into "open loop" when cold. That's when they inject extra fuel to warm the engine up. A choke restricts air flow to warm them up. It could be your TPS, or it could be a bad coolant temperature sensor. I believe there are two on your engine. One for the gauge and one for the computer. It's been a while since I've been in a first generation Magnum engine.

Think I would start with cleaning the throttle body. You don't have a choke.
