Hello all. '94 ram 1500 4x4.
I blew out my rear axle. Ive looked for a match to the front, but can't find one for a reasonable price (under $1500). Front axle is 3.54 and rear was 3.54. The closest I've gotten is a 3.9 (47 teeth ring gear; 12 teeth pinion gear). I've seen posts in several places that say front and rear difference must be within 1%, in order to not blow out transfer case. I'm not sure how to get that percentage to check it. The actual difference between front and replacement rear is 0.371.

Does anyone have any good advice on my conundrum? I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

 

The 3.92's won't work, you WILL break things. The gears you are looking for are generally listed as 3.55's.... one of the more common gearsets in the 2nd gens. Pretty much any 2nd gen 1500 4x4 will work as a donor. Gears do need to match though. The rear wheel speed sensor changed over the years though, so, some minor modification might be required on a newer axle.

 

3.9 ratio is roughly 10% higher numerically, so no way it works.

 

Thank you very very much for your answer. My plan is to still install the axle but I will NOT be running my 4 wheel drive-at all. Does that sound viable?

 

Absolutely. I'd pull and plug the CAD vac lines just in case

 

Find a 3.55 axle they are common and should cost nowhere near $1500. You can get them for 3-400 easily.
