The 42RH went behind the V6. Transmission Bench has a video for easy rebuilding of your transmission. It is a step by step process and if you can turn a wrench, Yes, you can rebuild your transmission. Watch the whole series before you dive into this
And a inexpensive rebuild kit 518, 46RH 46RE Transmission Overhaul Kit With Steels & Both Bands 90-97 | eBay

I'll look over the video. not sure if I will have the time to mess with it. that's my only concern. but I doubt I can get much $$ for it current condition and it would be good to go if I rebuilt the tyranny.

Did you ever determine if you have a 42RE or 42RH transmission in your truck? If it's a '96 truck, it should have a 42RE, but you should also have a OBD2 connector under the dash as well...

I thought the same thing, but after researching it a bit, seems that some of the early 2nd gen light duty trucks with 5.2 engines in them also got a 42RE transmission.

If it got a light duty trans, it should be the 44R? behind a V-8. 42 should only have come behind the six. Wonder if your trans was changed earlier in the trucks life....

This is one place that talks about the 42RE being used in light duty Ram 1500 trucks with a 5.2 engine or the V-6 engine..

https://itstillruns.com/differences-...s-8734382.html

It would be very helpful for the original poster to double-check to determine exactly what transmission is in his truck.

Wow, that looks like a good revenue stream for the trans guys at the dealership.......

Maybe pull a build sheet? That would tell him what came stock at least.

Absolutely! Seems that there were several transmission complaints associated with that configuration. Reminds me of a friend of mine that had a mid 80's Ram 1/2 ton truck with a 318 engine and a 904 transmission. He ended up selling the truck before the 904 transmission gave up the ghost.

that's the odd thing about this. I have a analog speedometer odometer all mechanical none of that's electronic. Check engine light is on but as I recall it was for two seemingly non-related issues which I addressed but it still didn't get rid of it. Now there might be a plug under there but it does not fit an OBD-2 as I recall trying that reader plug, so, I just figured it was an OBD plug, but, at least I can still Flash the codes with the key by counting the flashes until I get end of code signal.

It should be an OBD2 plug on a 1996 truck. Got a photo of the plug in the truck? You can also try flipping the OBD2 scanner plug upside down and inserting it into the connector to see it it fits. Lastly, do you have a build sheet under the hood of the truck?
