will it damage anything to drive it with the connector unplugged? I can manually shift 1-2-3
Might have to go to a shop and see if they have a way to figure this out.

You will have to shift manually, but, aside from that, won't hurt anything.

In addition, if you have the service manual, it will show the pinout for the connector, and what color wires are supposed to go to what pin. That may help you sort things out.

I think that is correct. The problem is there are 2-4 wires that are pretty much the same color.
I am going to take pictures Thursday if I don't make any progress and post them here

Red one is going to be the fat wire. 5 volt supply will be easy to identify as well... just test for voltage. (ignition on, engine doesn't have to be running.) as for the rest...... yeah.... maybe some brake cleaner, and bit of rubbing will bring up the original color?
